Abstract

Objectives: This study examines the concept of thematic unity in the Qur'anic surah by presenting the principal scholarly views that support or reject its existence and by identifying the methodological foundations of each perspective.

Methodology: A descriptive-analytical approach was adopted through a review and analysis of the opinions of classical and contemporary Qur'anic exegetes and researchers. Relevant exegetical and narrational evidence was examined, and the arguments of both proponents and opponents were compared.

Results: The study found that proponents of thematic unity maintain that each surah revolves around a central theme that connects its various topics and facilitates understanding of the relationships among its verses. It also found that a number of classical exegetes recognized the objectives of surahs and the coherence between their passages, while later scholars expanded this interpretive approach. In contrast, opponents argue that the diversity of subjects within a surah does not necessarily indicate a single overarching theme.

Conclusions: The study concludes that thematic unity remains an interpretive issue open to scholarly debate. Examining this concept contributes to a deeper understanding of the structure and objectives of Qur'anic surahs, highlights the methodological approaches of Qur'anic exegetes, and provides a useful framework for further research in Qur'anic studies.
