A Comparative Analysis of the Linguistic Features in the Praise Poems of Ibn al-Jiyab and Lisan al-Din Ibn al-Khatib

Abstract

This research intends to examine the poetic language of praise utilised by two Andalusian poets: Ibn al-Jiyab and Lisan al-Din Ibn al-Khatib. The language in the openings and conclusions of Ibn al-Khatib's modest poem of praise is robust and rich compared to the language in the beginnings of Ibn al-Jiyab. The intensity of praise varied in accordance with its meanings. The language in the compound poems of praise demonstrates Ibn al-Khatib's superiority over Ibn al-Jiyab regarding the appropriateness of certain introductory phrases to the themes of praise, while a disparity in the strength and weakness of the concluding language is evident between the two poets.
