The Augmented Triliteral Verb and the Implications of Augmentation in the Poem “The Orphan on Eid” by Marouf Al-Rusafi

Abstract

The verb serves as a crucial element within the framework of a sentence, indeed constituting its essential component. This assertion is universally acknowledged by both ancient scholars and contemporary linguists. The significance of the verb has garnered considerable focus from Arab linguists and grammarians throughout history. In this research, we will delve into the structures of the augmented verb to explore the implications of augmentation on its meaning and application. As articulated by the poet Al-Rusafi (died. 1945 AD), it becomes evident that a poet might employ certain verbs in their most basic form at one moment and in an expanded form at another. The reader might presume that the meanings remain unchanged; however, the truth is that they diverge significantly. Instances of this are: (raja’a and rajja’a, jama’a and tajamma’a).
