Grammatical Refutations in Genitive Nouns in “Khizānat al-Adab” by Al-Baghdadi Researcher: Ahmed Lateef Hajoul

Abstract

The grammatical opinions expressed by grammarians on various linguistic issues—especially syntactic ones—were not accepted unquestioningly; rather, they served as a fertile field for differing views and scholarly debate. Khizānat al-Adab by Al-Baghdadi includes numerous opinions by leading Arabic scholars who strove to protect the Arabic tongue from linguistic
errors in service of the Holy Qur’an. These devoted scholars did not fear criticism in their pursuit of truth and did not hesitate to offer refutations of the views of their predecessors or contemporaries. Indeed, the book is an encyclopedic work that encompasses a wide range of Arabic linguistic sciences. Al-Baghdadi demonstrated remarkable ability in utilizing the insights and grammatical judgments of earlier scholars. He sometimes exerted great effort in forming grammatical rulings or adopting certain opinions to refute what he deemed erroneous. This encouraged and inspired me to examine these refutations, analyze them, and evaluate the more valid opinions that align with established grammatical rules. Due to the diversity and abundance of such refutations in the studied text, this research focuses specifically on grammatical refutations related to genitive nouns.
