The Method of Ibn Kamal Pasha (940 AH) in His Book “Al-Filah Sharh al-Marah”

Abstract

The research focuses on the book "Al-Filah Sharh al-Marah" by Ibn Kamal Pasha (940 AH), which is an explanation of the book "Marah al-Arwah fi al-Sarf" by Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Mas'ud, one of the scholars of the nineteenth century. One of the research objectives is to elucidate the reason for re-explaining the book despite the existence of previous commentaries. The study also aims to highlight points of convergence and divergence between the commentator and the author, and the extent of their harmony. The research includes a brief biography of Ibn Kamal Pasha and his methodology in introduction of the book, as well as an explanation of its grammatical and morphological topics. It explores his attention to mentioning uncommon languages that are not subject to regular rules and special languages that may be used by one tribe over another. The study also covers the explanation of poetic verses and their grammatical analysis, clarification of obscure vocabulary, the arrangement of topics, and the presentation of morphological material in the style of 'fanqalah.'
